Due to the highly competitive and regulatory nature of the natural gas pipeline business today, there is increasing pressure placed on maximizing throughput while maintaining adherence to the regulatory requirements which constrain the system. Automation and simulation advances have reached the point where simple hydraulics is no longer adequate in analyzing the operation of a pipeline system.

We have developed advanced techniques that are used to automatically determine available capacities on a pipeline system on a system wide basis, as well as on a segment by segment basis. These capacities are calculated using simulation runs with current pipeline conditions, forecasted weather conditions, and scheduled maintenance outages, and can be made using nominations for short term analysis, and contract data for long term analysis. Good capacity estimates, based on state of the art simulation technology rather than historical averages or fixed numbers, are critical to schedulers in ensuring that the system is not over nominated, and just as importantly, to marketers so that they are aware of exactly how much capacity they have to sell.
